Ghana

Ghana is a republic on the Gulf of Guinea and a member of the Economic Community of West African States. English is the official language. The 1992 Constitution is the basis of the Fourth Republic. Independence from the United Kingdom was on 6 March 1957. The capital is Accra.

The currency is the Ghana cedi (GHS). Ghana has been a member of the World Trade Organization since 1 January 1995. Accra hosts the Secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area, which is why the country is a practical first desk for a portal that intends to cover the whole continent.

Merchandise trade is concentrated in gold, cocoa, and crude petroleum, alongside a widening set of processed and service exports. aLTlas does not rank those products here, because a ranking without a cited statistical release would be a guess. The Ghana Export Promotion Authority publishes export guidance, and the Ghana Statistical Service publishes the national accounts.

World Bank merchandise exports were $31.1 billion in 2025. Merchandise imports were $17.5 billion in 2025. These are goods totals, not a forecast. The product and partner tables, when shown, are the UN Comtrade breakdown of the same trade.

• Trade, not only projectsA large part of the work on this desk is ordinary trade: sourcing, standards, logistics through Tema and Takoradi, and the documents an importer or exporter must carry. The Ghana Export Promotion Authority is the public starting point for export registration. Sector regulators still sit in front of particular goods, including food, drugs, and minerals.
